In 1888 were installed the undeground batteries dug into the cliff.

The fort’s platform communicates with the underground batteries situates at water level, with a 10 meter deep artificial crevice.

On the other bank of the sound is another fort, « fort du Léon », also known as « Fort du Mengant ».

The reason for these two forts was the possibility of firing the battleships that would venture in the sound from both sides. Charts of that period (these charts can be seen at the « fort de la Pointe des Espagnols » museum.) represent all the possible projectile paths that could be fired from both forts.
