Some
batteries
were
dug
into
the
cliff
in
1888.
They
hosted
guns
of
320mm
which
were
to
fire
at
water
level
and
pierce
the
hulls
of
armour-plated
battleships.
On
the
pictures,
one
can
evaluate
the
narrowness
of
these
batteries’
loopholes.
A
rangefinding
station
was
situated
at
the
top
of
the
cliff,
from
which
were
given
orders
to
the
batteries
for
shooting
range.
From
the
batteries
situated
at
mid-cliff,
one
gets
a
180°
view
to
the
sound
of
Brest.
