Invaders could break into Roscanvel through two gates : the Quelern gate or the Camaret gate (see next page). At night, both gates were locked and the roscanvel peninsula was turned into o fortress (or was it a jail to its inhabitants ?).

The raod leading to the gates was designed as an "S" to prevent ennemies from placing artillery right in front of the gates and shoot them from a long distance.(The photograph is a view of the road to Quelern)

On the left hand side picture, one can seen from a distance the Quelern frtress walls.

The Sourdis barracks are located right behind the gates. they were built at the beginning of the 17 e century. The barracks were concieved to host a thousand soldiers and were named after Henri  d'Escoubleau de Sourdis, archbishop of the city of Bordeaux, who, according to historieans of the period was more a soldier than a clergyman. he proved his military valour during the siege of La Rochelle.

Richelieu appointed him chief of the Atlantic fleets. He wom a few battles against the spanish fleet
