e century.
The
barracks
were
concieved
to host
a
thousand
soldiers
and were
named
after
Henri
d'Escoubleau de Sourdis,
archbishop
of the
city of Bordeaux,
who,
according
to
historieans
of the
period
was more
a
soldier
than a
clergyman.
he
proved
his
military
valour
during
the
siege of
La
Rochelle.
