		The fortress was buit in an emergency when Louis XIV th appointed Vauban to the task. Fort Robert, les Capucins la pointe des Espagnols were fortified and armed with ertillery fairly promptly. the strands were fortified by earth levees and armed with canons.
	All the same, Vauban realized the topography of the area was something he could use. He had a natural ditch that crosses it dug deeper. But these works were unfinished and only terminated 1776. It took 7 years before they were completed. The ditch was finally enlarged and fortified on a instance of one kilometre.
