It is a rocky island at the foot of a cliff. It's position is highly strategic as it is located at the entrance of the sound called in French "le Goulet" to the bay of Brest. The wiew one gets from the fort embraces the bay of Camaret and the maritime traffic in and out of Brest.

The fort was built in 1848 according to the plans made by Vauban 150 years before.

The barracks are made of schist and granite and is perfectly part of the landscape .

Access to the fort is uneasy.

One can easily realise the problems encountered by the original builders of the fort to carry the material on the pot. Not to forget the big guns to be fit into the open air and underground batteries, with a shooting range of 7 miles.
